Broadband Internet has become very common, almost it is being used everywhere, so if you have a wireless router in your home then there is a good chance for you. If you don't have a Wireless network, then there is certainly a good time for you to embrace the freedom of Wireless Internet and switch on to the upgraded technology and make your network accessible anywhere in home. Let's assume that you have a router of your own, then it is necessary to configure it carefully to gain maximum security and performance. The procedure of setting-up a router varies from one model to other: you will have to check the instructions guide by manufacturer for accurate procedure on how to connect to the router from your PC and how to change settings of your router.
Generally, you can log-in the settings section of your router by typing the router's IP address (that is http://192.168.1.1 for some routers) into the URL section of your web-browser. If you are not sure about your router's IP address then you must search online using your router's Manufacturer and Model to confirm the IP address of your router.
Choosing a Password
When you will be logging into the settings of your router, you will be asked for an Administrator username and Password - by default, both parameters are set to "admin" for most of the routers (these parameters are always listed in the user manual. Standard passwords are very much common among hackers and I'm sure none of you wants any stranger to be able to change the settings of your router.
Choosing an SSID
The SSID (Short for "Serve Set Identifier") is the name that is shown by your wireless network to the world. Change the default SSID of your router (generally it is something like "Default Network" or it is name of the Manufacturer or Model of your router) to uniquely identify your router, but it is always recommended that you must avoid from using your own name or address because this will make easier to reach for tech-savvy thieves.
Setting Up Security
To keep the strangers away from accessing or connecting to your wireless network, there are various security categories in the security section. The best option among all is WPA2-PSK (in some routers it is called as WPA2 Personal or sometimes just WPA2). This option is very much secure and works with smartphones and tablets, games consoles, Wi-Fi Printers and other wireless enabled devices. Once you will enable WPA2 security option for your wireless network, you will be asked to apply a password on it. The password must be more than eight characters in length and it should be easy for you to memorize but impossible for anyone else to guess.
Picking a Protocol
You must make sure that your router is set-up to use the fastest Wi-Fi wireless protocol supported by you PC. Doing this might not speed-up the web browsing, but a better and faster protocol helps to speed-up the file transfers and it also helps to improve Wi-Fi reception.
